The Money PiecePosted on 24/08/2019
The Money Piece. Hair trends come and go with every season, but the need for natural and low-maintenance hair colour is eternal.
If you’re craving a seasonal update but don’t want to commit to all-over colour or monthly visits to your salon, there’s a solution. A new colouring method, aptly nicknamed ‘the money piece’, has been embraced in recent months as a way to offer clients a fresh look without all the fuss.
So, what is it exactly? According to Serena Preston, Technical Director at Barney Martin Hair in Sydney, the money piece is “a bright frame around the front hairline personalised after foiling or lightening”.
“This technique lifts your complexion, makes your colour pop and will grow out very softly with minimal upkeep or maintenance. We see the money piece at the front of the hair remaining a big trend. The strands of hair go right into the root area around the hairline.”
The trend was kick-started by Beyoncé, who debuted a lighter look in June 2019.
Since then, it’s grown in popularity and is expected to set the tone for hair colour trends ahead of summer 2020. “We started seeing this trend pop up at the end of last year and it has just been becoming more and more popular. What kicked it off is that it gives a new dimension to the low maintenance balayage,” the team at Barney Martin added.
“If your hair is dark it’s a great way to integrate some lighter colour without damaging the condition of hair. The money piece should never be an obvious look but subtle and refined.”
And in terms of the maintenance involved? Preston says it’s up to you as to whether you boost your colour or let it grow in to your hair.
“You may want to come in for a gloss treatment eight weeks or so after your initial appointment,” she explained. “A gloss is about 20 to 30 minutes in the salon so a quick top up if you want to show the lustre and luxe finish.”
